If you've ever used a Soft Spotlight Rig for lighting, you'd know that you can get very fast results with the shadows. It basically gives you a raytraced shadow "look" (unfortunately not through transparency) without having to use Raytracing.
What is different with my rig than the others?
Dynamic controls
Creates a camera as your base object. The beauty of having the camera is it makes it easier to position lights by selecting the rig and using the 'Look Through Selected' command. You can easily fly the lighting rig around to get the best position and then tweak it from there.
Changing the Cone Angle of the rig offsets the lights slightly.
All the lights radiating out have very slight offsets which update through the base rig. Ie, not every light has identical intensity, translations, rotations and cone angles, ... etc.
Aim control gives slight rotational offset to the light rig if you need a slight nudge. It also helps ease in or out the convex shape of the rig. The convex shape is barely noticeable, but enough to make the shadows that much softer.
Just place this MEL in your scripts folder and source, ... Should autocreate a rig at the origin.
