Create a
Circle r = 0.25 and an Ellipse L = 0.7 W = 0.5. Select the smallest ring and
apply a loft. For the shape, choose the Circle. In the Modify tab, set SS to 5
and PS to 30. Now check Path Steps under Path Parameters. Go to Front View and
set Path to 62. Get shape circle and set Path to 93. Get shape Ellipse and set
Path to 124. Get shape circle again and check off banking.
Now you cannot see much in Front View but in top view you can see the widening of the wire.
Same procedure for the other rings. For the middle ring set the Path Steps to 10. Set the circle shape to Path = 15 and Path = 29 and the ellipse to Path = 22. Under deformations click on Twist and bring both points up to 22.5.
For the large ring set Path Steps to 15. Circles on 23 and 41, Ellipse on 32. Set the Twist to 45.
Select the line between the knuckle bow and the largest ring. Apply loft with the Circle and set Path Steps to 20. Now set the Path to 15 and Get shape Circle again. Set the Path to the far end and Get shape Ellipse. Deformations Twist set the last point to -45.
Create a Loft for all the other lines in the hilt keeping the Path Steps on 15 with the Circle.
Now create another circle with r = 0.3. Select the Loft of the knuckle bow. Check Path Steps under Path Parameters and set Path to 16. Get shape the small circle again and set Path to 13. Get shape the larger circle and set path to 10. Now Get shape the small circle again. Go to Deformations Scale and insert a point at x = 10. Make it a Bezier Smooth and move the first point to y = 150. Make it a Bezier Corner and adjust the handles to yield a smooth result.
Now the knuckle bow is done there is only one thing left. Select the arc loft between the cross guard and the base of the rings. Click on the Hierarchy tab and click move pivot only. Move the pivot to x = 0 and apply a Mirror modifier. Check copy and done with the modelling.
Now comes the
Rendering part. Select all of the solid parts (so no splines) and copy them.
Select the blade, add an Edit Poly and attach all the other parts to it. Now
select on object level (5) everything but the blade. With everything selected
apply a Smooth modifier. The smooth will only have effect for the selected
parts. Check autosmooth.
Now apply another Edit Poly and go to object level (5)
again. Select everything but the blade and the grip and under Polygon
Properties set ID to 2. For the Grip set ID to 1 and for the blade set ID to 3.
Now open the material editor. Select the first material and click on Standard.
Now select Multi/Sub-Object from the menu. Keep the material.
Set number to 3 and under name fill in Grip, Hilt and Blade.
Take a high specular and glossiness for the metal. For letting the rapier lay down, position is (0, 0, 8.5) rotation is (5.476, 28.117, 2.691)
This is the final model rendered in VRay.
I hope you liked and learned from the tutorial
