Edge Extrusion modeling in Maya can be a pain. With an out of the box/vanilla Maya setup, its easy to end up with loads of hidden and unwanted edges on top of each other. The Safe Edge Extrude script, extrudes the edge and then jumps back to Move/Transform mode. So no unwanted nests of edges or surprises when you unwrap those UV's. CTRL+E is a good hotkey to bind it to.
