I added a link to some useful mel scripts on the physics forum, try these with your arrays and rendering.
I won't be able to compile for 2008 unfortunately, but there is an earlier version precompiled on the bullet site.

.....all array does't works on maya 2009 sp1a.
There is a way for render the array proxy geometry, or parent large number of geometry to proxy?
