Script works great. I added a simple fix for you to your symbol button command so that it will print out what the user picked when they press a button. Just paste this in and you'll be set:
symbolButton -image $XPM[$j] -annotation $XPM[$j]
-c ("print \"\\nYou chose: "+$XPM[$j]+"\"");
