Q/A

eye controls dont work

Date:07/23/2016
Submitted by: Sgtkoolaid Sgtkoolaid
I  have a rig set up with eye controls but the eyes do not move, or allow me to skin the mesh to control the eyes via the joint placed in the rig. What could I be doing wrong?? it looks like its rotatiing but the joint isnt actually moving. as well as when I move the eye control the joint does not move or effect the eye.

The eyes should be rotating. Maya doesn't really show the joints rotating in the scene. To check to make sure the eyes are rotating, you can select the joints and go Display>Transform Display>Local Rotation Axes. Then move the controls and you should see the eyes following. Why can you not skin the mesh to the joints? Are you getting an error? Are you selecting the joints and the eye geometry and doing regular skinning? -Dustin

I tried skinning them but didn't move despite erasing the influences of the other bones which was a bit odd. but by parenting them it worked. so is that the proper way? or should I be skinning them? thoughts?

okay well I will let you know, i am redoing the proxy rig and redoing the rig after that because the back was all messed up when I rotated the rig control for the back, was all distorted. so gonna check to see if it happens again.

If the geometry moves with the joints when parented, it seems like it must be an issue with the skinning. Normally I would recommend against parenting geometry to joints. The joint hierarchy should be kept separate from controls and joints. Also, if you hide the joints layer, it will hide this geometry. Additionally, if you are exporting your rig for a game engine, geometry probably won't work properly unless skinned.
