a short description is in the ZIP (readme.txt) - and a short 8x8-example-folder is included in the ZIP.
it renders 2x2-tiles , 3x3 , 4x4 , .... , 8x8 AND uses imagemagick (from www.imagemagick.org ) to put those TILES together . it is thought for people , who work in architecture , design or car-design to render poster-prints. It is not - however - a method to render those images in a one-click-option (you still have to be conscious about , where to put your images (directory) and in most cases have to change the renderScript.BATs and montage.BATs - for your own needs .
At least you can do that , or use the predefined folder , which - in this example - is "c:/temp/tile3" - save your tileRendertest.mb in "c:/temp" , in order to use the script and BAT files !!!
with a single resolution of 2560x1920 (of one image) it is possible to render 20 680 x 15 360 pixel-images .
but i just found out - when testing , that imagemagick is making some mistakes when making the montage, if you really render that high resolutions - but it works fine for any resolution up to 10 340 x 7 680 - at least in my render-tests. (you can also MONTAGE your final Image in Photoshop in that case)
usually (if you render wirth the TILE-OPTION of MR-command-line you can not go far over 5000 x 5000 , because of Memory-Problems , that is why i put together this package . also if you switch on Final Gather , Global Illumination , Ambiant Occlusion , caustic effects and so on you need to render many tiles - this method is an alternative to render tiles and automatically MONTAGE them .
i did not test it on MAC OSX and LUNIX , but there are versions of imagemagick for those Operating Systems , i think . so it should also work on MAC and Linux , works in Maya 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0
