Works with Subd surfaces! Select groups of level 0 faces, open up the texture editor and hit apply.
What it does is takes the faces you've selected and applies planar or auto mapping to them. Then it converts to edges and merges them all together. Basically a super auto mapping script.
----
how to install:
1. d/l the script.
2. Open the script in the script editor (windows->Script Editor)
3. Hit ctrl-a to select all the text that appears.
Drag the text to the shelf. A button will appear.
Press button
4. Select faces. Choose options. Press button.
Personally I always go with auto and faster.

Bug Fix:
Merging shouldn't include outer edges in certain situations with higher level faces.
Slow option works
---
Known problems:
1. In some cases going from level 0 to a level 2 area just won't work. Subd Sew fails. You can, instead, use the script at that level. Or *gasp* do it by hand.
2. Some level 0 faces that include significantly higher levels than surrounding faces don't merge. These high level faces "have no edges to merge to". Moving uvs around and undoing should snap them in place.
As far as I can tell both of these problems are with Maya and not with my script (yeah big words...). Report bugs to my email address above.
