Similar to PowerAnimator 'safety save' feature. Call this script from your 'userSetup.mel' & it will keep a number of rolling backups of your work.
Backups happen either every so many minutes, or after a number of objects have been selected/de-selected.
There's a GUI to change all the settings (how long between backups, where the backup files are saved etc).
