The Corsair was a single seat, single engined monoplane, designed as a land or carrier based fighter aircraft by the Chance Vought Aircraft Corporation at Stratford, Connecticut, U.S.A., where the Model F4U-1 was built. Structurally, the Corsair was chiefly designed about the centre wing fuselage section, which supported the engine section, the fuselage itself, the main landing gear and the outer wing panels. The aircraft was mainly fabricated of metal, although the outer wing panels were fabric covered, metal frames. A Pratt & Whitney R-2800-8 Double Wasp, air cooled radial engine powered the Corsair. The engine had a two stage supercharger and a water injection system, which drove a three bladed, constant speed, hydromatic Hamilton propellor.
