very nicely done, the only thing I would suggest is to slightly move some of the bar stools to break up the linear nature of the scene. Not too much since you want to maintain a clean chic look I\'m assuming.
as for if you can do this in 3ds Max, yeah, you can do this in any package if you spend enough time tweaking.
Renderman is faster then mental ray if you know what your doing, however, it is almost $1000 for one license, but if your serious about lighting/rendering, you should get it.
