Can a new Character_Mesh be imported to replace sample file mesh?

I'm more familiar with 3dsmax than maya, so bare with me on this one........ is it possible the import and replace the character mesh in the sample files provided, i.e. after the rigging process? 

I ve tried importing obj, FXB characters without success!
