So I had maya on my computer, but it was running slow, and there were SO MANY glitches, for example when I used the extrude tool a blue box was in place of the tool and needless to say I couldn't use it. There were many other strange things like this that made it impossible to complete any project.
I recently restored my computer to factory settings, and I was very pleased to find that when I re-installed maya it was working great, but then, for some reason it went back to being slow and having the strange glitches. My computer only has 512 MB of RAM and I know that that is not enough, but that's what my laptop had and it ran Maya just fine till it started to overheat and shut down (factory problem I guess) But my other guess is the graphics card, but I simply don't know. I'm 17 and I just am not an expert when it comes to solving computer problems like this. I know the sensible soloution is to buy a new computer, and believe when I have an extra 500 bucks i'll do just that. But untill then any advice on a cheap soloution would be greatly apreciated!!

No decent openGL acceleration = No luck with getting maya to work.

Im not sure if you can be helpped here. Hell the minimum graphics card they say you should have costs more then the 500$ and you cant install it on most systems because youd need to have sytem designed for the card. The overheating is going to keep happening. I mean a better gfx card eats up even more power and youll just overheat in jiff.

However without knowing what you have nobody is going to be able to give advice. Maybe theres something one could possibly do. TRy disabling all your windowing eye candy first.

512 is basically what maya + os eats on startup.

Spent all your money on the Maya license, didn't you?

Heh nah, I got the free learners version a long time ago when it was...still free. Anyway I found a way to fix my OTHER computer which is a laptop which aslo has 512 mb...I know that big pro Maya users laugh at this but it's all I have and since i'm still just learning anyway...I'm just glad I have something to do little projects on for now. Thanks for the advice though.

It is just the start of all your problems. As soon as you start upgrading your system for Maya there is no end to it. It is hard to have a system that can keep up with the software.

Why don't you start with upgrading your memory ? Doesn't cost you to much and both your OS and Maya will love it.

When it comes to the Graphic card I wouldn't spent to much on it. I have a solid gaming card and a profesional card but there is not much of a difference between the both of them. The Quadro card seems to be more stable. But in the end I still don't know how to use them to speed up render time. That is likely still not possible.

When you use a lot of high grade textures you want to have a graphics card with a decent amount of memory. When it comes to rendering, it is youre processor that does the job.

The cheapest way is to delete history very often. It can make your system run very slowly if you didn't pay atention to it. LOL !

Don't pin me down on this, this is just my own experience.
I am not a pro either.

Good luck!
