The image in the link you provided is using the Cell Renderer post effect.

You can achieve a see-through wireframe look by using the Atom Array object and making the cylinder and sphere radius on both very small.

Thank you so much for your reply!

I have now tried to do what you described, but I am quite new to C4D so unfortunately I haven’t been able to figure out how to do it. Is the Cell ender post effect a plug-in?

No, its not plug in.
You have to go to render options and then click Effects and choose Cell Renderer. 
Then you need to select the box for Wireframe.
